Türkiye
A massive Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria on February 6th, 2023 killed more than 53,000 people. I arrived in Antakya, the city with the most fatalities on the 5th day after the earthquake, right after the roads were reopened.
It was freezing cold with sub zero temperatures over night. Because of the damage to buildings, most of them were not safe to sleep in. People were searching the ruins for firewood to burn.
The death toll was immense. Rescuers were finding bodies quicker than ambulances could move them out of the street.
Miraculously some people survived over 120 hours under the rubble and were rescued alive.
Whenever found, prayer mats as well as religious books were treated with the utmost respect.
